Program Dates

May 28, 2024 - July 26, 2024

Due to the varying academic calendars of medical schools across the country, we have made our start dates flexible. The program is designed to accommodate students starting on 05/28/2024. Students can arrive at the program site at any time after it begins, but we request that students plan to attend the program full-time for a total of 8 weeks. We will consider applicants who can only attend 7 weeks on a case-by-case basis. The last day of the program for all students is 07/26/2024.

Program Highlights

• Intensive, structured laboratory-based research experience
• Didactic lunch lecture series delivered simultaneously to all sites via live videoconference
• Half-day rotations on medical, surgical, pediatric and radiation oncology services
• A three-day joint conference in Washington, DC that is focused on cancer-related advocacy and policy
• Weekly journal club
• Stipend of $5,000 (may be pro-rated according to actual period of attendance)
• Free gym membership at the Denton A. Cooley Center located on East Baltimore Campus
• End of program symposium

Students accepted into the program will report to various locations on the East Baltimore Campus. You can find a map of our East Baltimore Campus here.

Housing

The Program will provide for on-campus housing at the Scott-Bates Commons Residence Hall located on the Homewood Campus https://www.jhu.edu/maps-directions/Campus at no cost to visiting students.

Transportation and Parking

Students will travel to work from the University Homewood Campus, where dorms are located, to the East Baltimore (Hospital) campus daily. Students do not need a vehicle, as a free shuttle service is available. For students who wish to bring a car, daily parking may be provided at the East Baltimore Campus (work location) in the Caroline Street Garage or at the Homewood Campus in the San Martin Garage.

Registration

Upon initial acceptance into the program, students will be required to complete the JHU School of Medicine Research Elective Application for Visiting Medical Students. The application materials must be completed and approved by the School of Medicine prior to the student starting the summer program. Therefore, it is recommended that students begin the process of their registration as soon as possible once they are notified of acceptance. The general registration fee is covered by the program. We do not cover other fees that may be required such as a background check. Please contact us if you have any questions about registration.
